Jane Diane Lomax-Smith (born 19 June 1950) is a former Australian politician in the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Adelaide representing the Labor Party from 2002 to 2010, and Lord Mayor of Adelaide from 1997 to 2000. She was formerly Interim Director of the Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus), and is currently chair of the Board of the South Australian Museum.[1]

Lomax-Smith was born in the East End of London in the United Kingdom,[2] but later immigrated to Australia. In addition to her medical degree, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide in 1986. Before entering politics, she was a clinical pathologist, medical researcher and teacher.
Lomax-Smith first entered public office in 1997 when she was elected Lord Mayor of Adelaide. Her term as Lord Mayor ended in 2000.
At the 2002 state election she defeated the Liberal Party candidate Michael Harbison, who was preselected after the retirement of the Liberal Party incumbent Michael Armitage, to be elected a member of the South Australian parliament for the seat of Adelaide. She retained the seat at the 2006 election with a 60 percent two-party vote but was defeated at the 2010 election by Liberal candidate Rachel Sanderson,[3] with a two-party preferred swing of 14.5 percent. She was the state minister for Education, minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, minister for Tourism, and minister for the City of Adelaide 2002-2010 in the Rann Labor government.
Lomax-Smith is married with two children,[2] and lives within the city of Adelaide.
